Weather & Safety
A practical guide to Chia sea weather, local winds, safety equipment and what to know before your day on the water.
Understanding the sea before leaving the beach
Chia sea weather can be beautiful, clear and calm, but wind direction matters. South Sardinia is exposed to changing Mediterranean conditions, so the safest day at sea always starts with a proper forecast check and a local reading of the coast.
At WaveProject, we monitor the weather and sea conditions before every rental, charter or experience. If conditions are not suitable, we help guests choose a safer route, a different time slot or a new date.
This page explains the main local winds, what equipment is on board, what to bring and how our safety policy works in Chia, Su Giudeu and the surrounding South Sardinia coast.
Wind and wave forecast for Chia
The map below gives a live overview of wind conditions around Chia, Teulada and the South Sardinia coast. We still recommend checking with our team before departure, because local shelter and route choice can change the real boating experience.
How wind direction changes your route
Maestrale / Mistral (NW)
The Mistral is one of the most common winds in Sardinia. Around Chia, it often blows from land toward the sea, which can leave some coastal areas flatter and clearer, especially close to sheltered bays.
Scirocco / Sirocco (SE)
Sirocco is a warmer wind from the south-east. In Chia it can push waves into the bays and make some routes less comfortable, especially when it becomes stronger during the day.
Route choice matters
The same wind can feel very different depending on the route, distance from shore and departure point. Local knowledge helps guests avoid unnecessary discomfort and choose the right direction.
What happens if the weather is not safe?
Your safety comes first. If our team considers the sea conditions unsafe for your rental, charter or experience, we do not send you out just to keep the booking. We help you find the best solution.
Safety equipment checked daily
Every vessel in the WaveProject fleet is prepared with the required safety equipment. Our team checks the boats and equipment before the start of the day.
Life jackets
Adult and children sizes are available. Children and less confident swimmers should keep them on whenever required by the team.
First aid kit
A complete first aid kit is carried on board according to the vessel and activity setup.
Anchor & rope
Anchoring equipment is checked so guests can stop safely in suitable areas and avoid damaging the seabed.

How Mistral affects Chia sea weather
The Mistral, coming from the north-west, is a key factor for boating in South Sardinia. In the Chia area it often creates clearer and flatter water close to selected coastal sections because it can blow from land toward the sea. This does not automatically mean every Mistral day is safe: gusts, intensity and distance from the coast must always be considered.
Sirocco conditions and safety
The Sirocco comes from the south-east and can push waves directly into the bays. When a strong Sirocco is forecast, our team may recommend a more sheltered route, a different departure area, or a reschedule. This is why local advice is important: the safest itinerary depends on the wind, the swell and the experience level of the group.
Frequently asked questions about weather & safety
What is the best time of day for calm sea in Chia?
In many summer conditions, the morning is the calmest part of the day, especially between around 9:00 and 13:00. The breeze often increases in the afternoon, so we always check the forecast before confirming the best time for your activity.
Do you cancel boat rentals if the weather is bad?
Yes, if our team considers the sea unsafe, we do not send guests out. You can usually reschedule for free, and if that is not possible under our weather policy, a refund is arranged.
Is it safe to rent a boat without a license in Chia?
Yes, when conditions are suitable and the boat is used within the rules explained during the briefing. WaveProject provides a safety briefing, route advice and weather guidance before departure.
Which wind is best for boating in Chia?
There is no single answer because strength and route matter. A moderate Mistral can sometimes leave coastal water flatter near selected bays, while a strong Sirocco can create uncomfortable waves entering the bays.
What should I check before going out by boat?
Check wind direction, average wind speed, gusts, swell, the selected route and the experience level of the group. WaveProject checks these factors before confirming each rental or experience.
